What happened and how: breaking down the racist facebook messages of this summer
“It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up,” said Wellesley school Superintendent Dr. David Lussier. “I had never seen anything like it,” added high school Principal Dr. Jamie Chisum.
On the evening of July 14, a Wellesley student posted a series of screenshots from a private group chat to Facebook. Seven male students, three of whom attend Wellesley High School, sent the chat virulently racist messages about their peers as well as messages referencing homophobia and genocide. [...]

‘SETTING FORTH THE IMAGE WELLESLEY STANDS FOR’: SELECTMEN PLEDGE TOLERANCE
What began as a simple idea for Wellesley’s Board of Selectmen chair Marjorie Freiman has sparked townwide discussions, inter-organizational collaborations, and has unified residents in all corners of the town.
On December 12, the Board of Selectmen, Wellesley’s chief executive board, issued a statement reaffirming Wellesley’s commitment to embracing diversity in town. [...] |
Cotillion turns back to tradition
With over 60 years of dances, dates, and dresses under its wing, Wellesley Cotillion is no stranger to change. This year, while it will still offer the dance today’s high schoolers expect, Cotillion will look back to its simpler origins.
Taking place after the school break on January 9 (rather than before break, as usual), the dance will not have its usual holiday connotation. “At some point, I think we have to do away with Christmas anyway,” co-chair Cynthia Westerman said about the dance’s later date, “since not everybody celebrates it.” [...]

Cutting back on printing practice
You might want to reconsider printing that history reading because it might come out on bright orange paper, or it could come out on the backs of already-been-used papers, or it could not come out at all. Or maybe the reason you might want to reconsider printing it is because you can read it online and save the paper needed to print it. This printing uncertainty is due to the fact that at the end of this May, the high school neared the end of its white printer paper supply. [...]
5% budget increase allows schools to dodge a bullet on making major cuts
The time has come yet again for budget debates, and this year, unexpectedly high healthcare costs threatened substantial cuts to departments across the town. However, after negotiating with town employee unions to decrease healthcare costs, healthcare expenses will only increase by about 1%, rather than 8%, which is what they originally were projected to be. Because of this negotiation, town departments like the schools are saved from having to make extreme cuts to their budgets. [...]
One Act plays take the stage
Ranging from comedy to drama and everything in between, the One Act Plays offer an array of colorful and comical vignettes.
Taking place in the Little Theatre, the actors will perform plays in two groups over two days with Block A on Thursday the 17th at 3:30 and Friday at 7:00 and Block B on the 17th at 7:00 and Friday at 3:30. Students in the Acting IV class direct the short plays as part of the requirement for the class. Because of the abundance of students in the class, the short plays themselves are rather small with casts of two or three actors. [...]

AU REVOIR ET BON VOYAGE! STUDENTS DEPART ON FRENCH EXCHANGE

Departing from the U.S. on February 15, the travelers will arrive in Lyon to meet the French families they will stay with for the three week duration of the trip. Once there, the families will take their American visitors around France over their week-long February vacation. [...]

Town Moves to acquire north 40
There is peace at last for Wellesley residents following the tale of Wellesley College’s 46 acre plot of land for sale. A 35 million dollar peace -- a peace that will require months of decision making including a Town Meeting vote, voter approval, tax override, bond offering… Really the story is just starting. [...]
North forty divides community
It’s hard to drive far in Wellesley without coming across a bright orange “Save the North 40” sign, which have become ubiquitous in the past few months. This saying has dominated everything from lawn fronts to town politics, but what does it really mean?
The North 40, the nickname for the 46-acre patch of land wedged between Weston Road and Central Street, is now for sale by Wellesley College. Among prospective buyers is the Town of Wellesley, which is currently weighing their options as to whether they should buy the property. [...]
